At Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative, safety is at the heart of everything we do—and that includes protecting our crews while they work to keep your lights on. Whether restoring power after a storm, maintaining lines, or performing upgrades, our linemen often work just feet away from moving traffic. Your awareness can help ensure they make it home safely at the end of the day.
Slow down and move over.
When you see orange cones, flashing lights, or bucket trucks on the roadside, slow down immediately. North Carolina law requires drivers to move over one lane, if possible, or reduce speed when approaching utility or emergency work zones. These simple steps can prevent serious accidents and save lives.
Stay alert and minimize distractions.
Avoid using cell phones or other distractions while driving near a work zone. A moment’s inattention can lead to devastating consequences for workers on the ground or in the air.
Obey all posted signs and flaggers.
Flaggers and warning signs are there to guide you safely through work areas. Follow their directions carefully and remain patient—temporary delays are a small price to pay for everyone’s safety.
Give crews plenty of space.
Even when work isn’t blocking the roadway, utility vehicles and equipment need room to operate safely. Keep a safe distance and never enter a marked-off work area.
Our linemen work in all kinds of weather—day and night—to deliver reliable power to our members. By practicing safe driving habits around work zones, you play an important part in protecting the people who power our communities.
