October is National Co-op Month—a time to celebrate the cooperative business model and the values that set us apart from standard corporations. One of our favorite core principles is "Cooperation Among Cooperatives." To put that principle into action, Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative (CCEC) is teaming up with our fellow cooperative, First Flight Credit Union, to help you safeguard your personal information and declutter your home.
Mark your calendars! We are hosting a free joint Shred Day to give members of both cooperatives a safe, secure, and environmentally friendly way to destroy confidential paperwork.
Event Details
Date: Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026
Time: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM (Please note: The event will conclude at noon or as soon as the shred trucks are filled).
Location: CCEC's Newport office at 1300 Highway 24. Please enter from Highway 24. Traffic will exit from Hankinson Drive.
Eligibility: Free for all CCEC and First Flight Credit Union members.
What You Can Bring
To ensure we can accommodate as many members as possible, there is a strict limit of 6 banker boxes of documents per member.
Shredding old financial records, tax documents, medical files, and personal paperwork is one of the most effective ways to shield yourself from identity theft. Once the materials are safely destroyed on-site, the paper is securely recycled, making this event a win for your peace of mind and the environment.
Participants are encouraged to bring a donation of non-perishable food items for Martha's Mission. The most needed items are: peanut butter, rice, pasta, canned fruits and vegetables, canned meat, spaghetti sauce, and spices.
Tips for a Smooth Drop-Off
Pack efficiently: Please use standard banker boxes or bags that event staff can easily lift and empty. All boxes will be given back to members.
Check for debris: Ensure your documents are free of heavy metal clips, three-ring binders, or plastic folders (standard staples and paperclips are perfectly fine).
Arrive early: This is always a highly anticipated community event. Because the trucks operate on a first-come, first-served basis until they hit capacity, we recommend arriving early.
Stay in your car: To keep the line moving, event staff will unload your boxes for you. Boxes will be returned to you.
We look forward to seeing you there as we celebrate Co-op Month by working together to keep our members' private information safe and secure!
