September is National Preparedness Month: Be Ready Before Emergencies Strike

Each September, Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative joins communities across the country in recognizing National Preparedness Month—a reminder to take time now to plan ahead for unexpected events. From hurricanes and thunderstorms to power outages and floods, being prepared can make all the difference when disaster strikes.

1. Make a family emergency plan.
Talk with your loved ones about what to do in different emergency situations. Identify a safe place to meet, choose an out-of-town contact person, and make sure everyone knows how to reach one another if cell service is down.

2. Build or update your emergency kit.
Your kit should include at least three days’ worth of supplies: bottled water, nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, necessary medications, and important documents. Don’t forget extra chargers, pet supplies, and items for infants or elderly family members.

3. Know how to stay informed about outages.
During severe weather or emergencies, power outages may occur. Bookmark CCEC's outage map to stay up to date about outages and restoration progress. Stay tuned to local radio stations or trusted weather apps for updates.

4. Prepare your home.
Trim trees near power lines, secure outdoor furniture, and store loose items that could blow away in high winds. Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and ensure generators are ready to use safely—always outdoors and away from windows.

5. Stay calm and help others.
Preparedness isn’t just about supplies—it’s about community. Check in on neighbors, especially the elderly or those with medical needs, and lend a hand when it’s safe to do so.

At Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative, safety and reliability are at the core of everything we do. Our crews work year-round to strengthen our system and respond quickly when outages occur—but we all play a role in keeping our community safe.

Take time this month to get prepared. A few simple steps today can help protect your family tomorrow.
