Prevent the Spark: Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety Awareness

October is recognized as Fire Prevention Month, but practicing fire and electrical safety should be part of our routines all year long. Many home fires start with electrical problems that could easily be prevented with a little extra care and awareness. Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative encourages members to take a few minutes to inspect their homes and adopt safe habits that protect both people and property.

1. Check your electrical cords and outlets.
Frayed, cracked, or damaged cords can quickly spark a fire. Replace them right away, and never run cords under rugs or furniture where they can overheat. Avoid overloading outlets or power strips—spread out appliances across multiple outlets when possible.

2. Use appliances safely.
Unplug small appliances like toasters, coffee makers, or space heaters when they’re not in use. Keep flammable materials—such as towels, curtains, and paper—away from anything that produces heat.

3. Install and maintain smoke alarms.
Test smoke alarms monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year. For added protection, consider installing interconnected alarms so when one sounds, they all do.

4. Be cautious with extension cords.
Extension cords are designed for temporary use only. If you rely on them regularly, it may be time to have additional outlets installed by a licensed electrician. Always choose cords that are rated for the appliance or tool you’re using.

5. Practice generator safety.
During outages, never operate a generator indoors or in an enclosed space. Use it outdoors and away from windows, doors, and vents to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. Connect it safely using a transfer switch installed by a professional.

6. Schedule regular electrical inspections.
If your home is more than 20 years old or you’ve recently added new appliances or wiring, have a qualified electrician perform an inspection to ensure your system is safe and up to code.

Taking a few simple steps to prevent electrical fires not only protects your home—it could save lives. Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative reminds members that safety starts with awareness and prevention. Let’s work together to keep our homes, families, and communities safe.
