May is National Electrical Safety Month: Stay Safe, Stay Aware

Each May, Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative joins electric cooperatives across the country to recognize National Electrical Safety Month—a time to raise awareness about staying safe around electricity, both at home and in the community.

Electricity powers our lives every day, but it must be used with care. Taking a few simple precautions can prevent accidents, injuries, and even save lives.

1. Check your cords and outlets.
Inspect cords for cracks, fraying, or exposed wires, and replace damaged ones immediately. Never overload outlets or run cords under rugs where they can overheat.

2. Use extension cords safely.
Extension cords are designed for temporary use. If you find yourself relying on them often, consider having additional outlets installed by a qualified electrician.

3. Keep water and electricity separate.
Never use electrical devices near sinks, tubs, or other sources of water. Make sure outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor areas are equipped with ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs).

4. Stay safe outdoors.
Always look up before working near power lines. Keep ladders, poles, and tools at least 10 feet away from overhead lines. If you’re planting trees, choose the right location so branches won’t grow into power lines.

5. Talk to your family about electrical safety.
Teach children to never play near power lines or touch electrical equipment. Simple lessons can prevent dangerous situations later on.

At CCEC, safety is our top priority—both for our employees and our members. This May, take a few minutes to review your home’s electrical safety practices and make any needed updates. Together, we can make every month Electrical Safety Month.
