Four local students recently sharpened their basketball skills and experienced college campus life as recipients of Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative's (CCEC) 2026 Cooperative Sports Camp Scholarships.
Hunter Harris, a rising seventh grader at Morehead City Middle School, and Juellee Williams, a rising seventh grader at Newport Middle School, attended the Wolfpack Women's Basketball Camp at North Carolina State University. Taylor Struyk, a rising seventh grader at Beaufort Middle School, and William Mayse, a rising sixth grader at Morehead City Middle School, participated in the Carolina Basketball School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Each student received a full scholarship from CCEC to attend the overnight camps.

"CCEC was proud to sponsor these students as our 2026 Cooperative Sports Camp scholarship recipients," said Melissa Glenn, communications director for CCEC. "These students have demonstrated not only a passion for basketball, but also a strong commitment to academics, leadership and involvement in their schools and communities."
Recipients were selected by a panel of judges based on academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, an essay submission and responses to short-answer questions.
During the weeklong camps, students lived in campus residence halls and learned from college coaches and current and former student-athletes. Camp instructors focused on developing fundamental basketball skills while also emphasizing teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship and personal growth.
The N.C. State women's camp was led by head coach Wes Moore, his coaching staff and current and former Wolfpack players. The UNC camp was directed by new Tar Heel head coach Michael Malone, his staff and current and former Carolina players.

More than 50 students from electric cooperatives across North Carolina attended basketball camp this summer through the Cooperative Sports Camp Scholarship program. Now in its 23rd year, the program reflects North Carolina's electric cooperatives' ongoing commitment to supporting young people through educational and leadership opportunities.
