As the holidays grow closer, Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative reminds members to keep safety top of mind this Thanksgiving season. With extra cooking, heating, and decorating, it’s one of the busiest—and potentially most hazardous—times of the year for home accidents and electrical issues.
Cook with care. Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires during the holidays. Never leave the kitchen unattended while frying or baking, and keep flammable items like towels and paper away from the stove. If you’re using an electric appliance such as a slow cooker or air fryer, make sure cords are in good condition and outlets aren’t overloaded.
Heat your home safely. As temperatures drop, portable heaters become a popular option—but they can be dangerous if not used properly. Keep heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn and plug them directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip.
Use electricity wisely. When decorating, inspect cords and lights for cracks or frays and replace damaged sets immediately. Turn off indoor and outdoor decorations before leaving home or going to bed.
