Hurricane Season is Here: Preparing Today for Tomorrow’s Weather

The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1 and runs through November 30. Early forecasts are predicting a near-to slightly below-average season. However, it only takes one storm making landfall or a close path to the coast to create a dangerous situation.

NOAA reports that nearly all tropical cyclone activity occurs during the official hurricane season, with peak activity typically occurring between mid-August and mid-October. Even storms that make landfall far from eastern North Carolina can bring heavy rain, flooding, tornadoes, and extended power outages to our area.

At Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative (CCEC), preparing for hurricane season is a year-round effort. Long before the first tropical system develops, co-op crews and staff are working behind the scenes to strengthen the electric system and improve storm response.

How Your Co-op Is Preparing

To prepare for hurricane season, the co-op is:

  • Inspecting and maintaining power lines, poles, substations, and equipment.
  • Trimming trees and vegetation near power lines to reduce storm-related outages.
  • Reviewing emergency response plans and storm restoration procedures.
  • Coordinating with statewide electric cooperative partners and contract crews for additional support if major damage occurs.
  • Monitoring forecasts from NOAA and the National Hurricane Center throughout hurricane season.

What Can Members Do Now to Prepare

The best time to prepare for a hurricane is before a storm is approaching. Members can take several steps now to help keep their families safe and minimize disruptions.

  • Build an emergency kit. Your kit should include enough supplies to last several days after a storm including bottled water, nonperishable food, flashlights and extra batteries, first aid supplies, prescription medications, phone chargers, important documents stored in a waterproof container, cash, and a battery-powered radio.
  • Prepare for power outages. Extended outages are possible after hurricanes and tropical storms. Members should charge phones before storms arrive, fuel vehicles and generators, review generator safety tips, use flashlights instead of candles, and have a backup plan for medical devices requiring electricity.
  • Stay Connected. Members should follow the co-op on social media for outage and restoration updates. Sign up now for outage texting by texting CCEMC to 1.800.682.2217. Be sure to bookmark the co-op’s outage map at outage.carteretcraven.coop.

Preparation Makes a Difference

Hurricanes and tropical storms can develop quickly, but preparation can help reduce stress and improve safety when severe weather threatens our communities.

At CCEC, we are committed to preparing for whatever the 2026 hurricane season may bring. By working together and planning ahead, we can help keep our communities safe, informed, and resilient throughout hurricane season and beyond.
