Have you seen ads or received messages offering to pay your electric bill for a 30% or 50% discount? It sounds like a lifesaver, but it’s actually a high-tech "Smash & Grab" for your wallet.
This is the Payment Method Scam, and it’s leaving victims with no money and double the debt.
🕵️ How the Scam Works
-
The Pitch: A "broker" or "agency" claims they can lower your utility bill. They tell you to pay them (for example) $200, and they will pay your $400 electric bill for you.
-
The Stolen Card: The scammer uses a stolen credit card to pay your utility company the full $400.
-
The "Proof": You see a $0 balance on your utility account and think you got a great deal, so you send the scammer your $200 via Zelle, Venmo, or Bitcoin.
-
The Crash: Weeks later, the real owner of the stolen credit card reports the fraud. The utility company reverses the payment, and you now owe the full $400 again plus any late or return check fees.
⚠️ The Reality Check
-
The Scammer Wins: They walked away with your "discount" payment in untraceable cash.
-
You Lose Twice: You’re out the money you gave the scammer, AND you still owe your utility provider the original bill amount.
-
Legal Risk: Because your account was involved in a fraudulent transaction, you could face service disconnection or even a fraud investigation.
🛡️ Protect Yourself
-
Only Pay Directly: ONLY pay through CCEC's official payment site https://carteretcraven.coop, PowerPay24 app, or payment line at 252.777.5150.
-
If it’s too good to be true, it is: Utility companies don't offer "secret discounts" through random people on Telegram, WhatsApp, or Facebook Marketplace.
-
Report It: If you’ve fallen for this, contact us or your other utility provider immediately to explain the situation.
