Summer in eastern North Carolina brings warm days, long evenings—and the potential for severe storms and hurricanes. While we can’t control the weather, we can prepare for it. Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative encourages all members to take time now to make sure your family and home are ready when storms strike.
1. Make a plan.
Talk with your family about what to do if a hurricane or severe storm approaches. Know your evacuation routes, identify a safe room in your home, and make arrangements for pets. Planning ahead can help reduce stress when time is short.
2. Build an emergency kit.
Stock up on essentials like bottled water, nonperishable food, flashlights, extra batteries, a first-aid kit, and important documents. Include a portable phone charger and any medications your family may need.
3. Prepare your home.
Trim trees and remove loose branches that could damage power lines or property. Secure outdoor furniture and other items that could become projectiles in high winds. If you have a generator, test it ahead of time and follow all safety instructions—operate it outdoors and away from windows to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
4. Stay informed.
Bookmark the co-op's outage map. Monitor local forecasts and sign up for severe weather alerts. When warnings are issued, take them seriously. After a storm, avoid flooded areas and never drive through standing water.
5. Stay safe around power lines.
If you see a downed power line, stay far away and report it immediately to CCEC or local authorities. Always assume lines are energized and dangerous.
CCEC crews are always ready to respond when storms cause outages, working safely and efficiently to restore power to our members. Your cooperation—by staying clear of work zones and reporting hazards—helps our linemen do their jobs quickly and safely.
Preparation today can make all the difference tomorrow. Take time this summer to review your emergency plans, restock supplies, and make safety your first priority.
