Back to School, Back to Safety: Electrical Safety Tips for Families

As students head back to school and families settle into new routines, it’s a great time to brush up on safety—especially when it comes to electricity. Whether kids are studying at home, riding the bus, or walking to class, Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative reminds everyone to stay alert and practice smart electrical habits.

1. Check cords and outlets in study areas.
Before the homework starts piling up, take a moment to inspect lamps, chargers, and electronics. Replace frayed or damaged cords, and never overload outlets or power strips. Make sure cords aren’t running under rugs or furniture where they can overheat.

2. Keep devices charged safely.
With more technology in use than ever, students often charge multiple devices at once. Use only manufacturer-approved chargers and unplug them when not in use. Avoid placing phones, tablets, or laptops on beds or other soft surfaces while charging—they can easily overheat.

3. Review outdoor safety rules.
Remind kids to stay away from power lines, transformers, and electrical equipment on their way to and from school. Never climb trees or fly kites near power lines, and if they see a downed line, they should stay far away and tell an adult right away.

4. School zone awareness for drivers.
As buses return to the roads, drivers should slow down and pay attention in school zones. Watch for children walking or biking, and be cautious near crosswalks and bus stops.

5. Practice safety with cords and appliances at home.
Teach children to plug and unplug devices carefully—grasping the plug, not the cord—and to keep drinks and snacks away from electronics.

A new school year is a fresh start for learning—and that includes learning to stay safe. Taking time to share these simple reminders helps protect your family and keeps our community powered safely.
