(FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS)
"What are capital credits?" |
One of the benefits of being a member of a cooperative is the capital
credits program. These credits, or operating margins, are the funds
the cooperative earned above an beyond operating expenses. As a
member, you allow the cooperative to use these funds for solvency and
to provide for upgrades to the facilities. Once the amount of capital
credits is determined for a given year, the funds are returned to your
account, based on your electricity usage for that year. After a
certain period, the cooperative completes a general retirement of
those funds, and they are returned to you. If the member dies, the
capital credits are returned to his or her estate.
