The Youth Leadership Weekend began in
2005 and involved 21 high school juniors from
Croatan High School,
East Carteret High School, Havelock High School, Jones Senior High
School and West Carteret High School. The purpose of the event is to
provide leadership training for local young people. The weekend
included leadership training, exposure to cooperatives and positive
impact sessions.
Selection of students was left up to
the local schools (either through the counselors' offices or through
the junior class teachers) with the possibility of six students from
each school. Students were not necessarily from cooperative families.
Speakers included General Tom
Braatan, USMC Ret. speaking on teamwork and leadership, former Harlem
Legends, Dexter Williams, local historian Rodney Kemp and others. The
students also participated in a Challenge Course designed by
counselors at the Trinity Center.
At the end of the weekend, the students
were encouraged to write an essay about their experiences during the
weekend. A selection committee judged the entries and the winner
received a $500 scholarship to be given once the student is enrolled
in college.
With three years under our belts, we
continue to fine tune and plan even better Youth
Leadership Weekend events. The dates for the 2008 session will be February
8th, 9th & 10th.
