own and maintain over 2,186 miles of energized lines and have a
customer density of 16.7 per mile, as compared to 32 customers per
mile average for investor-owned utilities and only 5 customers per
mile average for cooperative utilities. Our total plant is valued at
over $86,074,000.00.
We are one of 27 electric
cooperatives located in the state of North Carolina (see
www.ncemcs.com). Together, these organizations serve more than 2 million
North Carolinians and about 58%
of the state's land area. These not-for-profit cooperatives serve
about 800,000 homes, farms, industries and businesses in 93 of North
Carolina’s 100 counties and parts of three other states: South
Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. Nationally, over 1,000 cooperatives
serve over 30 million consumers in 46 states, serving more than 75% of
the geographic area of the United States. We are a part of this
national group represented by the National Rural Electric Cooperative
