YOUTH LEADERSHIP POWER POINT PRESENTATION
TWO
NEW DIRECTORS ELECTED AT CCEC ANNUAL MEETING
Dewey Wayne Willis
of Straits and Douglas Fulcher of Morehead City were elected to the
Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative Board of Directors in an election
announced Thursday evening at the co-op’s 68th Annual
Meeting at Glad Tidings Church in Morehead City.
Mr. Willis takes the
seat held by long-time incumbent District 7 Incumbent David Chadwick,
while Mr. Fulcher unseated incumbent Nellie Garner of Newport, who has
represented District 5 on the board since 1987. Four seats were up for
election, but the other two seats were unchallenged. Those are held by
Incumbent District 9 Director Jerome Meadows, who serves as board
president, and District 10 Director Clifford Rice, who represents
members of the former Harkers Island EMC, which merged with CCEC on Jan.
1.
“We
are pleased to welcome two new members to the board,” said Mr.
Meadows. “We also would like honor Ms. Garner and Mr. Chadwick, who
gave many years of dedicated service to the cooperative and its
members.”
The
election was just one of many highlights of the evening. Those attending
took part in health screenings, refreshments served by the
cooperative’s Relay for Life team and stellar entertainment provided
by
Havelock
High School
’s jazz band, and
Croatan
High School
’s choral group.
State
Sen. Jean Preston and Rep. Pat McElraft spoke briefly, each thanking the
members for their support of the cooperative and the service it provides
not only to its consumers, but in the community as well.
CCEC
Community Relations Director Bill Ward provided energy efficiency
information and demonstrations, including a “pedal power” unit,
which shows the amount of “work” or energy needed to power
appliances and lights, compact-fluorescent lighting (CFL) displays, and
a window solar heat-gain display.
With
climate change and energy bills weighing on the minds of many, the
cooperative, through its statewide organization, N.C. Association of
Electric Cooperatives, provided information and enlisted participation
in a nationwide “Our Energy, Our Future” campaign (www.ourenergy.coop),
which calls for state and national legislators to carefully consider the
need for new, reliable power plants to fuel a growing nation, as well as
the affordability of any legislation.
“The federal
government is almost certain to enact legislation in the near future
that is aimed at reducing carbon emissions from power plants,” said
Craig Conrad, the cooperative’s CEO and General Manager. “The EPA
examined one proposed bill and reported that it would raise wholesale
electric rates by 44 percent by the year 2030.
“We, too, believe
in protecting the environment and reducing carbon emissions, but we also
believe that any legislative action must include the consumer – you
and me – in the equation.”
Finally, evening
came to a close with the awarding of prizes. Several cooperative members
won cash prizes, while two won grand prizes. Charles Watts of Emerald
Isle was the winner of six months of free electricity, and Shirley
Cornell of
Newport
was the winner of a 1996 Ford Ranger pickup truck retired from the
cooperative’s fleet.
Ms. Cornell proved
that it pays to attend the annual meeting each year. This was the second
time she has one a cooperative truck. She took home a 1989 Chevrolet
truck from the 1998 Annual Meeting.
